From the web site:
Why Masturbate? Why Masturbate-a-thon?
Despite great strides in sex-positive education, masturbation for many remains a taboo subject. We believe:
* Masturbation is the safest sex.
* More masturbation means more sexual self-awareness.
* Masturbation with a partner can be educational and hot.
The Center For Sex & Culture is 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to sexual freedom and safety, offering classes and workshops that continue to promote a sex-positive reality. Come for this good cause. Wank for the greater good. Jill-off in pride and support. Help keep sex education safe, accurate and fun.

Three Important Sex-related Bills in Congress! Support them now!
Submitted by Elizabeth on 2 May 2007 - 3:49pmThere are so many major issues facing our nation these days that it's easy to lose track of them all. Since this is, after all, Sex in the Public Square, I want to remind everyone of three very important sex-related bills that are making their way through congress:
S. 972/H.R. 1653: These two bills go by the apprpriate name: Responsible Education About Life Act (REAL) and would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to provide funding to states for sex education programs that include information about contraception and disease prevention, and would require the federal government also to evaluate the effectiveness of sex education programs.

Sex Ed(itorials)
Submitted by Elizabeth on 30 April 2007 - 5:36pmThe New York Times had two important editorials in the past three days dealing with important issues of sex and policy.
Today's took up the case, again, of Genarlow Wilson, the young man in Georgia who is still serving time in prison for the consensual oral sex he had when he was 17 with a girl who was two years younger. Specifically, the Times chastises the DA in the case for continuing to focus on the rape that occured at that party (of which Wilson was acquitted) and even circulating the video tape that was made of the rape, as part of his lobbying effort against Genarlow Wilson's release.

Perverted News Roundup
Submitted by Chris on 23 April 2007 - 4:10pmReview of Shortbus DVD (Clean Sheets): Clean Sheets reviews John Cameron Mitchell's followup to Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a sex-positive and sex-realistic drama about relationships in NYC.
Revenge of the World Bank Secretaries (Alternet): Susie Bright takes a look at the latest sexual pecadillo within the Neocons; Paul Wolfowitz, the married, hawkish Zionist who heads the World Bank, is facing calls for his resignation because of his affair with an employee, a Saudi woman named Shaha Riza whose salary got a big boost from $132,660 to $193,590 per year thanks to her relationship with the boss. Shit. For that kind of money, I'd do Wolfowitz.
How the Web Became a Sexist's Paradise (Alternet): Jessica Valenti gives a good summation of how blithely misogyny is accepted in Internet culture these days, using the recent issue of Kathy Sierra's intimidation via internet death threats as an example.

Everything you never wanted your kids to know about sex (but were afraid they'd ask)
Submitted by Elizabeth on 19 April 2007 - 1:39pm(Originally published at Sex In the Public Square on Wordpress.com)
My mother says I don’t write enough about positive things in this blog, and she’s right. So I’ve decided to start a book review section where I’ll tell you about books I think help to create a healthy and open sexual environment. This is a great moment to begin, because I just read a fantastic book about kids and sex.

Submitted by Elizabeth on 15 April 2007 - 12:50pm- Underground abortions are one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in Chile. Although Chile has one of South America’s strictest anti-abortion codes, it’s estimated to have twice as many abortions each year (200,000) as Canada — a country with twice Chile’s population. (Abortion is legal in Canada.) As a result, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, a socialist, late last year sanctioned the free distribution of abortion-inducing “morning-after” contraception pills at government-run hospitals. (Emphasis mine.)
